The Gift of Forgiveness:Letting Go for You, Not for Them

Why do so many of us fear forgiveness, and choose to stay in suffering instead?
Because staying stuck is simply more comfortable. Victimhood is one of the ego's
favorite tools, quietly keeping us in place for a lifetime if we let it.
Forgiving others is the most selfish thing you can do, because you do it for yourself, not for the other person.
So, are you ready to move beyond the past and let it all go, once and for all?
If your answer is yes, keep reading. If it's no, stay with me anyway, I might just change your mind.
Why Do We Forgive Others, or Ourselves?
Because we become ready to release the pain that a past event caused us. In doing so, we heal, we move forward, and we create a more harmonious, loving life for ourselves.
How Can We Forgive Others, or Ourselves?
Connect with the situation. Recognize what is harming you in this moment, and become aware that it stems from a past trauma, conditioning, or event.
Ask yourself a few questions. Who harmed me? Why did they do it? Under what influence were they at that time? Who might have harmed them?
Gain understanding. Seeing the full situation can help you understand them.
Write a letter, to them or to yourself. Include every detail without any filter: how you felt, your full emotions, and how it still affects you today.
Step into their shoes. This can help you understand why they did what they did.
Open your heart and forgive them, and give yourself permission to let it all go.
When you feel ready, burn the letter.
Give yourself time and space to process. Don't skip this step, integration matters deeply.
In your letter, say everything you need to say, without a filter. Share how you felt about the situation, and how it may still be shaping your present moment. Tell them you want to break the cycle and heal the past, so you forgive them, and forgive yourself too. You do not have to send this letter, or audio, to anyone. It's for you, to express your feelings and emotions. By putting these heavy emotions into words, you release them into reality instead of carrying them silently inside. In a way, you're giving yourself the attention, love, and care that helps these emotions finally heal.
It also helps to understand that, deep down, nobody truly wants to harm another person. When it happens, it's usually because that person has suffered their own unhealed pain, swept it under the carpet, and remained unaware of their own behavior. Left unexamined, this can become a cycle passed down through generations. But you can choose differently. You can break the cycle, so these emotions and traumas don't pass on to your own children.

If you choose to share a letter of forgiveness with someone, place yourself in their shoes first, with an open heart, and feel into what they may have experienced that led them to behave the way they did. Approach it with as much love and understanding as you can offer.
And remember: forgiveness often comes in layers. You may release one layer today, and find another rising to the surface later, sometimes with the very same person. Be patient with yourself, and be brave enough to keep going deeper within.
Sometimes, it also helps to connect with the other person directly and talk things through. In my experience, though, we aren't always ready at the same time, so this path doesn't work with everyone. Letters remain the gentlest way to express yourself freely.
You can also write a letter to a past version of yourself. Tell them how you feel about certain actions or behaviors, and then meet that past version of you with the same love and understanding.
You are here to shape your present and future, not to keep living in your past.
Be brave. Be courageous enough to go deep within. You are a fantastic, amazing being, and you can do this.
